Daisy Sanchez

Hello all! Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!

HIV/AIDS Awareness has always been an extremely important issue to me. I learned from a young age that all people with illnesses are unfortunately not treated with the same level of compassion and respect that they deserve. Someone who I was very close to growing up, especially after my childhood cancer diagnosis, has lived with HIV for over a decade. As a cancer survivor I can personally attest to and empathize with the struggle of living with life threatening illness. However, due to the nature of my disease, I thankfully have never experienced the trauma of widespread misunderstanding and stigma, heinous discrimination, social ostracization, and lack of affordable and accessible treatment that many individuals with HIV/AIDS are subjected to.
One of the most crucial ways to support the eradication of this illness and the surrounding stigma is through raising both awareness and donations to support organizations that aid in the distribution of urgently needed services such as HIV testing, education, counseling, community outreach, and medical services.

According to the New York based non-profit Gay Men’s Health Center (GMHC), over 1.1 million people in the U.S. are currently living with HIV. In 2017 alone, an estimated 38,739 people in the U.S. became infected with HIV. New York leads the nation in the number of new HIV cases, with more than 2,100 new diagnoses in 2017. More than 125,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV/AIDS, and yet nearly 20% do not know they are infected.
To date, over 100,000 New Yorkers have died from AIDS-related causes. Since the epidemic began in 1981, nearly 700,000 people in the U.S. and more than 35 million people worldwide have died of AIDS-related causes.

The HIV/AIDS crisis never stopped, but with your help we can work towards its end.

I greatly appreciate donations of any amount to support this vital cause through the New York AIDS Walk and strongly encourage anyone interested in alternative ways of contributing to look into participating as a walker/runner or volunteer. Thank you!

Unfortunately the minimum contribution for the AIDS Walk is $15. If you are interested in directly supporting the GMHC, the HIV/AIDS advocacy non-profit organization which the AIDS Walk fundraises for, you can donate as little as $1 through their website. Likewise, the Ali Forney Center, an LGBT shelter and non-profit organization also accepts donations as low as $1. Links to both websites are posted below.

These are both organizations which I have made contributions to for the past few years. The work they do is beyond vital. If you do not wish to donate, I ask that you please at least visit their websites to educate yourself on issues pertaining to the HIV/AIDS crisis and at-risk LGBT youth.
