I work at GMHC's Testing Center, where we strive to reach New York's goal to End the Epidemic. Our goal is to reduce the number of new HIV infections to just 750 (from an estimated 3,000) THIS YEAR and achieve the first ever decrease in HIV prevalence in New York State!
The Covid-19 pandemic HAS NOT stopped GMHC's important work! Since we closed our offices in mid-March, we have been:
- Rolling out GMHC on the Go – a meal delivery service for our most food insecure clients, delivering 8,000+ meals so far as well as hundreds of grocery cards that can be used at area markets
- Conducting Wellness Checks for 1,200 of our most at-risk clients
- Moving clients to remote program access, including mental health and substance use counseling, and HIV testing and counseling.
That's right--the Testing Center is now able to offer clients free home HIV tests, shipped directly and discreetly to the client’s home! These tests are designed for anyone to be able to administer themselves. GMHC Testing Center staff will provide HIV education and counseling sessions via phone to any client who requests it. When needed, Testing Center staff will also provide support and appropriate referrals for medical care to clients who receive these home test kits. Coronavirus is obviously at the forefront of everyone's mind, and health concerns of all other kinds are being pushed to the back burner right now. As much as possible, we can't let that happen for HIV.
The physical AIDS Walk New York event is cancelled but a virtual event is still on and we need to raise funds to support our clients.
You can support me, and GMHC's work, by making a donation to AIDS Walk New York!
